Who comes up with all these holidays? Seriously, it’s National Grammar Day. Of course, to all the editors out there, this is your day! For the rest of us writers who can kinda spell and know that the little period goes at the end of a sentence (don’t get me started on comas! I meant, commas.) it’s most likely…’eh’.

Anyway, it got me thinking about how much I didn’t like certain parts of English in school. Diagramming sentences was. not. fun. I remembered what adjectives were, but what did adverbs do again? And what in the world is a GERUND??? I’m still unsure about it to this day. The rules of English never quite stayed consistent. Also, if there’s a bunch of fuss over a decimal dot in math, then even more so with periods (and commas too!) It’s interesting how much a sentence changes meaning with punctuation.

So today, I thought it’d be fun to share some funny memes about grammar and all it’s wonderfulness (yes, I know what you’re thinking about that last sentence. ‘Its’ is misspelled…*facepalm*).

Who knew that periods and commas make such a huge difference?

In all seriousness, though, over the years I’ve been really appreciating the English lessons I went through as a kid. As I look back, I realize it has made such a huge impact on my writing. I have a good sense of where commas go (to some degree or another; it gets trickier when writing dialogue…) and I know the difference between quiet and quite (and most other words…sort of XD. I’m a work in progress…)

The point is, it’s helped my writing a lot, especially when I needed to go back and start edits. So, if you’re still trekking through English classes, keep at it, writer! Even if you don’t remember everything (like me *waves hand*), you’re writing will become much better with practice. *cough* I meant your, not you’re *facepalm* (did I mention that I’m a work in progress? *lol*).

    Now, try learning all these English grammar thingies and then earn them all over again in another language. 😂 (I’m struggling through that right now.

      1. I am trying to learn Spanish. I’ve been taking about a year and a half now, I’ve finished two courses, I can read it ok, and I can hear it a little, but speaking is not my best. I can write it pretty good so far.

    1. Haha, don’t worry. It confuses all native English speakers too, most of the time (unless they happen to be English teachers or maybe editors…). And you’re right, we do have a lot of tenses XD.

      1. Yeah, my language does a lot of things (active/passive, done/continuous) with prefixes and suffixes instead, so we have just 3 tenses – present, past, and future.

  5. *screams so loud I shake the apartment complex and send the rest of our already-wounded roof off from where it belongs* NO. WAY. THERE IS A LITERAL DAY SET ASIDE FOR GRAMMAR???? WHERE HAS THIS BEEN ALL MY LIFE???? *wails* (And no, I’m not an editor. I do, however, like English. XD)
    And HAHA, WAIT, NO, DIAGRAMMING!!! I’m still doing it LOL! (High school life. XD)
    Haha, the memes! And hm, I’ve been taught the differences between hyphens and dashes! I just didn’t know dashes were called em-dashes. XD Thank you for imparting such knowledge to me. XD
    And EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE, I love you even more for this post. *dramatic swooning*

    1. *shouts to be heard* HI AMELIA IT’S SO GOOD TO SEE YOU!!! (and yes, there is! Unfortunately, I don’t think you can use it as an excuse to take a holiday from school…rather, they’d probably use it as a good reason to do homework, especially English class XD.)

      Lol, some parts of English are fun! (namely, correcting grammar in a story example…course I probably liked reading the story more lol.)

        Hehe, true, reading the story can be better than editing. But editing grammar and punctuation and capitalization is fun, as long as you know what you’re doing. XDXDXD

        1. True…and come to think of it, it is Saturday, so an actual holiday that falls on the weekend? Naw, please let it fall on a workday/schoolday instead! That makes it more fun lol.

          Oof! I’d better not get hyped up before bed either XD. Here, we’ll give it to our poor story characters. They’ve been through so much trauma already (plus the sugar can give them an extra boost of energy to keep going lol.)

  6. LOL, the coffee cans one was hilarious! (Really all of them were! XD) It’s amazing how much of a difference punctuation makes in a sentence! I’m going through a grammar class of sorts with the rest of my siblings each Friday – my mom’s teaching the basics of diagramming. I can’t say it’s fun, but I guess it’s good to be refreshed on those kinds of things. 😂

  8. Well, I’m Italian, so in schools teachers don’t teach us English in an advanced level (for now)
    Anyway, my favourite memes are the second and the fourth, I loved them hahahahaha
    And anyway (again 😶), I really loved your post, too 🙂

      1. Yes, English and Italian are so different sometimes. Perhaps Italian is a little more difficult. But they are both very beautiful languages ​​and cultures worth learning and discovering 🙂

      Next we need an ‘Appreciate Your Book Editor Day’ since they (*cough* in this case, my parents) help fix any grammar rules I missed while writing.

      Aw, so glad you like them! Those ones were funny! I’d say the ‘violators won’t be prosecuted’ one was a favorite of mine too.

      Lol, I didn’t even realize there was a difference between the two! (Okay, I didn’t realize there was a thing officially called an em-dash until this week…I guess I figured it was the same as a hyphen XD.)

  10. Ha ha! Happy National Grammar Day! I guess my post was a little early. 😂

    I hated diagramming sentences in school. I hated English, actually. And yet I could read a book and pick out all the grammar rules and then use them in my writing. Can’t explain it. 🤷‍♀️
